Major sports events such as the World Cup or the Olympic Games often change the face of the host city as well. The city of Athens hosted the Olympic Games in 2004. Besides investments into infrastructure - 70 km of six-lane roads and 30 km of new railway tracks - and new sport arenas many new construction projects were launched and existing buildings upgraded.
The idea was to combine historic Greek myths with new architectural trends and products. In this time Haver & Boecker architectural wire mesh has been incorporated in many projects, which showcase the diversified fields of use of wire cloth.
An architectural highlight for example is the Benaki Museum, which was equipped with a facade cladding consisting of 361 m² of stainless steel wire mesh type EGLA-TWIN 4253. Twelve 14,30 m high elements were installed using the flat tension profile and clevis screw mechanism. At the bottom additional tension springs were incorporated.
The same mesh type was used for a facade cladding at the Tounta Museum. 18 elements in varying lengths of up to 8,80 m and widths of up to 2,50 m were mounted using the same installation system as for the Benaki Museum. If required two of these elements can be hooked out of the construction, for example to transport larger exhibitions items into the museum.
The entrance to a pedestrian crossing at Siggrou Avenue, one of the main roads through Athens, was visually enhanced with a canopy made from 250 m² of DOKAWELL-DUO 3422. This project proves that coarse meshes appear a lot lighter in actual applications.
A new sports arena built specially for the Olympics was equipped with wire mesh as well. The "Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre" was constructed on an area of 123.000 m² at the coast of Faliro and can host up to 9.600 visitors. For the cladding of the front and back facade Haver & Boecker supplied 730 m² of MULTI-BARRETTE 8123.
Besides public projects wire mesh has been used in private buildings as well. Kaliftaki’s is the office building of S&B Industrial Materials S.A. and has received a high-end ceiling design with wire mesh made from DOKAWELL-MONO 3001.
